As the silly season rolls around

As the silly season rolls around – our creative guru at Perth Garden Lights is fast whipping up new ideas for accessible party lighting you can try yourself. Ferry lights are an easy winner for the classic Aussie barbie this season. The plug and play technology makes them easy to use – and they’re the first thing that comes to mind when you think “Christmas” and “lights”. But the versatile ferry light can look a bit hit and miss if you plan to just chuck a few around as an after-thought. Getting the wow-factor with ferry lights often means using a lot of lights to cover an iconic feature…say a tree! Covering a tree with ferry lights isn’t exactly a novel idea, but doing it so it looks like this requires the right tools, patience and some skill. For a perfectly sparkled natural tree, use ferry lights with small LED bulbs that are closely packed and make sure you stock up (or can go back for more of the same). A large part of getting this look requires that you actually just go a bit OTT with your wrapping. So it’s important to get the right low-voltage ferry lights and check that your chosen lights can be used safely when packed closely together. Wrap your tree, starting from the bottom of the trunk and working up through the main branches. Remember to leave the male plug at the bottom of your tree, ready to connect with your outdoor extension cord that will run to your power point. You’ll need to keep plugging new strings together as you come to the end of each length of ferry light. Your lights will look more closely packed (and less stripy) if you wrap the same section of tree twice, running the wire in opposite directions on each wrap (i.e.: clockwise and counter-clockwise). We recommend always starting from the bottom of the tree so that you are essentially wrapping the tree from toe to tip – twice! This means you’ll end up with two male plugs sitting at the base of your tree when you’re done – so you’ll need an extension chord that can take two plugs. Don’t fuss over keeping even spacing between your lights because those small details will be lost if you pack enough sparkle on the tree. Wrapping your smaller branches will be the trickiest part of the project. It’s a time consuming task and may require reaching in through the branches – so prepare a sturdy ladder that gives you comfortable reach from a secure spot so you can move about with ease. Arm yourself with plastic ties and plant clips so you can secure the lights to the tree in those areas where simply wrapping the tree won’t work for you. Plastic and wire twist ties help keep things in place around bends and uneven parts of the tree, while plant clips will be your friend for the finer branches.

Simple Ways to light up your plants

Plants play such essential part of making our outdoor environment a beautiful escape. While the atmosphere of the garden awakens our senses during the day, at night it can lose its magic if your garden does not have landscape lighting. Here are few tips that will help your garden come to life at night. Lighting up your garden plants the “right way” is important to creating the right soothing atmosphere. Follow these simple tips and you will see garden in a different light at night! MOONLIGHTING: It is a great way to light up your plants. Moonlight sounds so cool in a way and we can use it to a great advantage. Moonlight can be a charade to make your plants look wonderful and charming. Well, you might be asking how do we do it? Don’t worry, it’s pretty simple. Add an illuminating source high above your garden so they can shine down through your plants or trees. The light passing from the plants would create adorable patterns and create a romantic aura. BACKLIGHTING It is an illustrated outline and is intended to represent to shape of an object. It produces a similar appearance which is produced when the object being viewed is situated in darkness with brighter lighting behind it. Well, the beautiful thing is we can use it with our plants and make them appear more beautiful. But make sure to place the lighting source at a right distance to produce extraordinary effects. SPOTLIGHTING: This method is nothing but placing a light source under a tall tree. Position it in such a way that the leaves of the tall tree create wonderful effects. Leaves of the tree will now attract everyone and also make your garden look better than before. This method works with taller trees. In fact, the tree should almost be 6 meters high or more. FOCUSSING: It is yet another method to light up your plants. Under this method, we place source under the plant and position it upwards i.e; the light is focused upwards. Plants are lightened up from upwards and the light is illuminated from the bottom. It looks like a celestial event when the effects create an astounding effect. These few methods can help with your lighting design. The right lighting can make the plants in your garden look magical, and alter the mood. Perth Dining Venues that Got It Right….in more ways than one

Any Perthian who has lived this side of the Indian Ocean in the past few years can attest to the growing number of cafés, restaurants and eateries that have popped up around the place. These new venues are often home-grown start-ups that ooze with hipster vibes and will generally impress you with the smells, tastes and visual pleasures they have on offer. In the time we’ve spent living in this vast and isolated sand pit oasis, the team at Perth Garden Lights (PGL) has been known to pay a visit or two to the hottest venues around Perth, looking not just for a sample of the menu, but looking more critically at the full dining experience to find what’s working best for those who’ve got it spot on. There’s a high volume of culturally diverse eateries out there, with mouth-watering bites that could seriously rival some of the best in the country. As expected, there’s fierce competition developing between these new businesses – precisely because there are so many around, and it’s difficult for business owners to stand out when each new venue consistently raises the bar on the diners’ experience. Add to that a downturn in Western Australia’s economy, and the conditions don’t stack up in favour of the business owners behind Perth’s hot new establishments. Many of these owners are new to food and catering and much more many are also new to business. So how do eatery keep ahead of the competition and a hungry demand? Beyond the obvious improvements well known to those in the business, (think menu and service), venue owners are getting increasingly creative about their interior design and ever more attuned to the experience of their diners, from the moment they set food inside right through to when the cheque arrives. PGL’s co-founder, Ali Saljoughian, has been talking with his mouth full to as many entrepreneurs as will tolerate it, and as it turns out, staying ahead doesn’t have to involve mad cash or death by debt. Here are the 3 hottest tips that are keeping diners interested and reservations flowing. Temperature Control Though the city is best known for its endless sunshine and cloudless blue skies – most of the year – there’s no denying that the average Perth metropolitan doesn’t do winter well. And the hibernating masses are not the only ones who need a lesson in. Restaurants and cafés need to work harder at luring people away from their home comforts by turning up the heat – literally. As simple as it seems, maintaining a comfortable temperature in all seating zones is a level of detail that is escaping the attention of a surprising number of restaurateurs and Tapas bars. Space Planning We often wonder how small cafés manage to get a hoard of customers while large spacious restaurants find most of their tables empty. With so much more riding on patronage, the savvy restaurateurs out there are those that have carefully planned out their available real estate to create space that supports and promotes a social atmosphere. The sight of a full, small café space automatically triggers a social atmosphere. But the open dining halls of fully loaded restaurants can appear soul-less and lonely unless strategically planned for. Organic seating arrangement that encourage social behaviour require the use of a mixture of arm-chairs, tall tables and communal dining benches. The idea is to bring people together, be it over coffee, a meal or glass of red. Setting The Right Lighting Mood Creating the right ambience for an eatery is key to enhance any dining experience and make the space more visually appealing.  Whether it’s a romantic evening out, or friend’s night out, lighting plays an important role in setting the mood dining experience.  The “entrance” of café/restaurant is first focus area, as it sets the mood the rest of our space and with the right ambience draws new customers in. Maximise on your outdoor space by bringing to life by using LED landscape lighting. Depending on the outdoor space several different outdoor lighting fittings can be used to create an oasis from the outdoor space, this includes; spot lights, spike lights, in-ground lights and path lights fittings. When it comes to the unique landscape lighting ideas, Perth Garden Lights has helped small businesses transform their space to a welcoming social atmosphere that offered tangible results. A professional service that offers designs, supply, installation, and maintenance that get the job done on time and within a budget.
